ArcBest Announces Closure of 10 Service Centers and 2% Workforce Reduction to Advance Restructuring
ArcBest unveiled a restructuring plan on Thursday, involving the closure of 10 service centers, a 2% workforce reduction, and the consolidation of its brands. The company expects this move to save $40 million annually, but initial investments will be higher. The newly launched Vaux Freight Movement System will be discontinued, while the Vaux Smart Autonomy product line (including autonomous forklifts) will be retained.
ArcBest announced a restructuring plan on Thursday that will close 1% of its terminals (i.e., 10 service centers) and cut 2% of its workforce. The transportation group said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that the restructuring involves closing 10 service centers in smaller markets and consolidating their operations into nearby operating locations.
According to the securities filing, the plan is designed to save $40 million annually, but initial implementation costs will exceed that figure. Additionally, multiple brands under ArcBest, including MoLo Solutions and Panther Premium Logistics, will operate under the ArcBest brand starting August 1, while its less-than-truckload (LTL) brand ABF Freight will remain unchanged. This information comes from a press release issued by the company.
ArcBest President and CEO Seth Runser said in the press release: "Integrating the capabilities of MoLo and Panther under one ArcBest brand better enables us to act as one team, providing a more coordinated customer experience for our solutions." He also noted that the streamlined brand structure helps improve operational efficiency and profitability.
In terms of business adjustments, ArcBest said its newly launched service offering, the Vaux Freight Movement System with faster loading speeds, will be discontinued. However, the company confirmed in an email to Trucking Dive that it will continue to retain and focus on the Vaux Smart Autonomy product line, which includes its autonomous forklifts.
Additionally, ArcBest noted that the workforce reduction will include eliminating multiple vacant positions. Runser said the adjustments at this Arkansas-based transportation company, whose history dates back to 1923, are intended to further strengthen operations to continue the company's long-term development.
