NMFTA Launches Threat Reporting Portal to Strengthen Freight Network Risk Sharing
NMFTA released a new portal on June 3 for companies to anonymously report cybersecurity threats and freight fraud incidents. This initiative aims to promote industry information sharing, helping parties identify risks early and take preventive measures. Previously, the FBI listed related fraudulent tactics in an announcement on April 30; in May, FMCSA and the Department of Transportation launched an anti-fraud registration system; Congress is reviewing the "2025 Combating Organized Retail Crime Act." NMFTA also launched a freight fraud prevention center in March.
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) announced on June 3 the launch of a new resource aimed at enhancing the industry's awareness and response capabilities to cyber threats and freight fraud. In the announcement, the organization stated that the newly launchedfree anonymous threat report portal(Threat Report Portal) allows companies to anonymously share information about security incidents and suspicious activities.
The core goal of the portal is to facilitate anonymous information exchange among companies to enable earlier detection and response to potential risks. NMFTA Chief Operating and Technology Officer Joe Ohr said in a press release: "When organizations share their experiences, the entire industry benefits." He added that the portal helps stakeholders communicate emerging risks and take proactive, preventive measures.
NMFTA noted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released apublic service announcementon April 30 listing multiple cybersecurity issues, including fraudulent emails and links, as well as other scams aimed at intercepting cargo, and the portal was designed to address these threats.
On the regulatory front, in May, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT)launcheda comprehensively reformed unified registration system. Officials stated that the system, through improved review procedures,helps prevent fraud。
On the legislative side, the U.S. Congress is considering the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act of 2025. Theactaims to expand the scope of incidents prosecutors can pursue, allowing penalties for ongoing incidents occurring within a 12-month period, and increasing resource investments, such as establishing a national coordination center.
American Trucking Associations (ATA) President and CEO Chris Spear issued astatementafter the bill passed the House, saying: "Cargo thieves steal $18 million from the trucking industry every day, and carriers and consumers pay the price."
NMFTA's new portal is another digital resource recently launched by the organization. In March of this year, the organization also launched an online information platform called theFreight Fraud Prevention Hub(Freight Fraud Prevention Hub) to provide guidance on fraud mitigation.
