The Abilene Motor Express brand is in its final countdown. Company President Larry Johnson said in a LinkedIn post that the carrier, acquired by Knight Transportation in 2018, will be folded into Swift Transportation's operations as part of a broader effort to improve efficiency and streamline operations. Knight Transportation is a subsidiary of Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings.

The company said Abilene will continue to operate under its own name until January 27. But as for the brand itself, the company told Trucking Dive via LinkedIn: "Eventually, it will go away."

Johnson said Abilene's drivers will transition to Swift and will receive guidance and support throughout the process. Meanwhile, the company is also directly contacting customers to inform them of the next steps.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) database, as of late May, Abilene had 334 power units and 312 drivers.

When Knight Transportation acquired Abilene, the deal added $100 million in revenue to its portfolio.

According to the company's website, brothers Keith and Kolen Jones founded Abilene in 1986 with a single tractor.

Johnson, who worked at Swift Transportation before becoming president of the company in July 2024, said the integration will help the Virginia-based carrier "work more closely together, act more quickly, and provide better service to drivers and customers."

This rebranding follows a similar move by Knight-Swift's less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier, which had already unified under the AAA Cooper Transportation brand earlier in the year.
