Analysis of the Impact of ArcBest's Restructuring Plan on ABF Freight Operations
As part of its restructuring plan, ArcBest will close and consolidate multiple service centers in states including Connecticut, Kentucky, and Illinois, affecting approximately 1% of total dock doors. Additionally, the company plans to reduce about 2% of its non-union workforce, subject to agreements with unions.
As part of a company-wide restructuring plan, ArcBest plans to close service centers in multiple states and consolidate operations into nearby locations. The plan aims to optimize operational efficiency and align with the reshaping and rebranding of certain business segments.
According to an email ArcBest sent to Trucking Dive, the closures involve service centers at the following locations: Plainfield, Connecticut; Bowling Green, Kentucky; Effingham, Illinois; Sullivan, Missouri; Sioux City, Iowa; Watertown, South Dakota; Port Allen, Louisiana; Hattiesburg and Tupelo, Mississippi; and Blountville, Tennessee.
Service centers planned for closure
The aforementioned cuts account for approximately 1% of the carrier's total door count. This is part of ArcBest'srestructuring and rebrandingof certain business segments.
The adjustment also includes workforce reductions, involving the elimination of some vacant positions, with an overall workforce reduction of approximately 2%. Union spokesperson Matt McQuaid said in an email that these positions do not involve workers represented by the Teamsters union.
However, according to documents ArcBest filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the service center changes still require approval by a joint union-management committee under the National Master Freight Agreement. McQuaid told Trucking Dive by phone that fewer than 50 union employees will be transferred from smaller facilities to larger nearby facilities as part of the transition.
