According to a news release this month, less-than-truckload carrier Saia has appointed Gautam Bhat as vice president of data and artificial intelligence, a newly created leadership position.

The announcement said Bhat will focus on "advancing the company's enterprise data strategy, as well as the responsible application of AI across the business."

Bhat said ina LinkedIn postthat "the opportunity to lead data and AI here is incredibly exciting, as the LTL space is ripe for AI transformation."

The primary responsibility of the role is to support Saia's technology-driven modernization, scaling, and long-term growth initiatives.

Bhat brings extensive experience in AI and data, having held executive roles at Graphic Packaging International, machine automation manufacturer ABB, and several General Electric companies such as GE Energy Connections.

Saia President and CEO Frederick "Fritz" Holzgrefe recently noted during thefirst-quarter earnings callthat data analytics and optimization tools are core components of the company's strategy. He said, "We will continue to invest in these capabilities and expand the use of these tools."

According to a 2025 report from the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics, approximately $65.5 billionof work in the transportation sector annually is highly exposed to the impact of artificial intelligence, with AI technology expected to enhance worker productivity.
